About
My name is Jonas Whitfield. For a while I spent most of my weekends and all of my holidays walking around coastlines with a camera that was heavier than it needed to be. This site is what came out of it.
I started on a secondhand Pentax and later moved to a Mamiya 7, which I still think is the best thing I ever bought. I developed the black and white myself in a kitchen that was never quite dark enough, and sent the colour off to a lab. A few frames here are digital, from days when the film ran out or the light wouldn't wait.
I like weather. Clear blue skies make for nice holidays and dull photographs. Fog, low cloud, the last ten minutes of dusk: that's when places stop looking like postcards and start looking like themselves.
There are four series, roughly in the order I made them. I've stopped photographing seriously and don't plan to add more, so treat this as finished rather than abandoned. The pages will stay as they are.
Prints and use
I don't sell prints. If you'd like to use a photograph for something non-commercial, a book, a talk, a small exhibition, write to me and I'll usually say yes. Details are on the contact page.
